Otis Redding appeared on the December 9, 1967 episode of Cleveland television show Upbeat on WEWS-TV. In this clip from the appearance, he performs "Respect." Tragically, Redding died in a plane crash the following day. [video clip courtesy of WEWS-TV].

    Why do you call this karma? Otis Redding recorded "Respect" in 1965. Aretha Franklin did not record "Respect" until 1967. Have some respect for the man, he was a great artist that had his career and life end way too early.

    He is singing about women having respect for men with a very defensive male perspective. Aretha sings it with as a woman saying men need to have respect... I'm not saying who's is better. I know who recorded it first.
