  • you have transposed the lute part as I see your fingering?

  • Hello Greet:

Yes, we did move the accompaniment down a step to g minor for this performance to take advantage of a richer sound for Donna's voice. We sometimes perform it in f# minor with original fingerings on a lower-pitched lute - it depends on the context. In this concert, we featured the first four ayres from Dowland's second book in sequence as a dialogue.

  • Last week I attended a concert by the bass Joel Frederiksen (an American by the way) who accompanied himself on an E-lute, also a good solution for low voice.

He made a very nice cd The Elfin Knight with his ensemble Phoenix , based in Munich, Germany

  • Now I can die happy. I have been waiting to hear this most beautiful voice and artistic soul interpreting this, as you say, most quintessential song. Thank you both.

  • very well as ever!

  • Quite lachrymose!
