The new BBC Wallander adaptations have become a big favorite of mine in recent years. This particular back story serves to depict the pain involved in divorce and how it can be a misunderstood pain for those around you. Having such a strong moral back story intertwined with a thrilling crime mystery bares all the hallmarks of Henning Mankell's talented writing.

  • The English version is definitely not as good as the Swedish one. I'm not saying that the English one is bad, but Wallander IS Swedish. How can the English one be better than the Swedish one? Krister Henriksson was born to play Kurt Wallander.

  • @alesoving12 That sounds pretty protectionist. We have had English stories done abroad, just because they are not at their origin does not mean they did a worse job. The fact is Kenneth Branagh is a world class actor, They shot the English version better using the RED ONE HD camera and used better composition, Of course those in Scandinavia will say the Swedish version is better that's just predictable.

  • OK, I apologise. Maybe I didn't mean "rubbish", but I don't think that in terms of casting, acting and direction the English version is as good.

Maybe, as with me, English is your second language, as I see you are from Wales. Perhaps the subtitles are a drag for you - I know they are for many.

I might add that I have worked as an extra in both productions, as have many of my family and in fairness, the English gang were great to work for.

    ps, like your song!

  • @Ystadcop How on earth can Kenneth Branagh be bad casting? Saw all the Swedish adaptations film and tv then read all the books and eventually saw the English version and Kenneth plays Kurt Wallander with an accuracy to the books that the others lack. He can tell 10 pages with just a well placed expression and the fact that he just won a second bafta award for this role is testament to that.

Don't get me wrong the Swedish ones are good but Branagh was born to play Kurt Wallander.

  • @Ystadcop I must also protest you have a natural bias from your own nationality. I lived in Sweden for a year and the Swedes are the most patriotic country I have ever known. I know all about the rivalry between Sweden and Norway and how a song almost caused a war between them. The law that the Swedish flag cannot be on mast at night time unless in ribbon form. Jag förstår sverige ;)

Not all scandinavian people will say that the swedish production is better. I've seen both Lassgård and Henricsson play Kurt Wallander and both of them did a good job. Branagh on the other hand absolutely nailed the role. As You say in an other comment he's able to tell something with nothing but expression. I enjoy the swedish version and consider "Mastermind" pure world class. However If I'd have to choose either on I'd go for the english one.

  • @silversynth this is shot beautifully. Edited wonderfully.

  • I find that the English Wallander is more relatable--he seems to have more problems, while the Swedish one is too calm and well-adjusted by comparison. I like the Swedish Linda, although we don't see much of her. Linda always seems to have that same melancholy, thoughtful undercurrent that the English Linda lacks.

  • Rubbish English version..............
