@rtworincinerator or....fail in school...learn how to build speakers....make better ones for £500...and start an audio company...

There are better speakers out there....but not at this price. When comparing to lets say B&W you have to remember that these have built is DSP's and amplifiers that match them. With many other you have to buy that on the side and a good amp is not cheap. I work with sound and I was really blown away by the sound and the power. The can play so loud that standing 3 meters away makes you ears pray for merci. Alot of speakers can play loud but not many can play so controlled bass at these levels.

@rtworincinerator What does school have to do with anything? The industrial revolution was in 1830. That shit's old. Anyone with a passion for something and a little practical thinking can afford some B&O speakers in today's world. =]

The 'grey' thing is a microphone that calibrates the loudspeaker, and analyzes the sound of the room" and tailor the speakers' performance accordingly. With BeoLab 5, it is as easy as pressing a button on top of one of the speakers. The process takes just two minutes and can be repeated easily in case you move your speakers or install new floors because you want to.
