The legendary Bid caps his amazing career with a fine walkover, with running commentary from Frank Wright, Jack Whitaker and trainer Buddy Delp.

What I also remember was a couple of weeks later when Spectacular Bid was to run in the Jockey Club Gold Cup against Temperance Hill, and shortly before Marshall Cassidy could announce it that day, a fan in the stand yelled "Spectacular Bid's Scratched!!" from that JCGC, with Cassidy then announcing that and that he had been retired. Is there any video of that JCGC?

@AwsiDooger Fernando's MLB debut was in 1981, not 1980.

I saw him win the big cap at Santa Anita, still the greatest , would have beat Secretariat on his best day. What a shame he didnt run in the gold cup at Belmont. I recall Bud Delp saying " he would have won by as far as a country boy can throw a stone! "

It's just a pleasure to watch this horse run. Maybe the greatest thoroughbred ever.

If Secretariat ran with 4 years was also a champion. And at 5, too. Unfortunately not left running in peak form.

We have not seen a horse of Spectacular Bid's caliber since. I personally rank him at the top w Secretariat. It amazes me that people discount him because he did not win the TC. He was a champion at 2, 3, & 4. How many horses can claim that?

Wow where did you get this? Awesome. I've been dying to see his Florida Derby win. The only time I've seen it was in this made about jockeys and a big part of it was on Ronnie Franklin.
Franklin rode him miserably in that race, but the Bid was such a great horse, Shaq could have rode him and he would still place. They don't make them like this anymore.

I have a large collection of old videotapes that are yet to be converted. Unfortunately, I don't have the '79 Florida Derby, but with any luck, I'll stumble across it. Ronnie Franklin was a very troubled young man that should be praised for his triumphs, but it's too bad he rode The Bid so badly in the Florida Derby and Belmont Stakes. With a better ride or with Shoemaker aboard, Bid certainly would have been a Triple Crown winner.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for the comments.

Great video. Thanks for posting.
I remember bringing a bulky battery operated TV to a football game in Los Angeles, so I could watch this race. A coed behind me was livid that I refused to switch the channel to the Dodger game so she could watch Fernando Valenzuela.
True story. I was laughing at her, thinking that she could dictate what I watched, after I lugged it to the Coliseum. She was trying to round up support from fellow students: "Can you believe that? He won't watch Fernando."

Sir, I always enjoy your interesting tales; this one was a particularly funny one. Strange how some bossy people think they can commandeer anything with enough "support." I'd rather watch The Bid anyday, although Fernando's screwball was pretty entertaining at the time.
Thanks for the laugh.
