As a student nurse in the early 1980s, Sandy Nicolson's training brought her into contact with a young woman in her 40s (on a surgical unit) that was dying from cancer. Sandy noticed that many nurses didn't know how to treat the patient to support her needs during the end stage of her life. Sandy volunteered during her shifts to care for the young woman as one of her patient assignments. From this experience she knew she wanted to learn more about end of life care.
This led her in 1990 to a career with the palliative unit at Bluewater Health in Sarnia. Working in this unit, Sandy has mentored other nurses, helping them to learn how to provide comfort and dignity to patients.
Sandy and the other health care professionals on her team, truly personify compassion. This video shows how they help families cope with one of the most traumatic experiences - a patient at the end of his or her life.
