@1800BAUD It's not my best effort by far, I know. It's actually quite hard to solder with the iron at a very low angle stuck under a big camera on a tripod and a magnifying glass in front of it, whilst talking and watching the camera at the same time to boot.

technically 'reflow' means paste and oven

@Sigma175 No Australian talks like that.

Easily the best videos on hand soldering for beginners, I have ever seen.
Brilliant.

Thanks for this series of videos! - It's been a few years since I last soldered anything and wanted to actually get my technique right rather than just trying every method until it works.

My method of soldering two lead (resistor, cap) SOT chips. I tin both pads on the board, I then drop the SOT on the pads (mostly centered), use two pencil irons (one in each hand) and reflow. Let surface tension center the SOT. I can get it to work about 90% of the time. Most mistakes is when one of the irons "wicks" the part up when the iron is removed.

On the big pad near the end of the video, wouldn't of it been easier to put some flux on it? Also wouldn't you want to recomend some temperature heat resistant tape? Or would that not matter? Thanks for the video but would be nice to have my questions answered... :)

@spinctah Yeah, I need to put the pump down and get out my 125w Weller and my 60/40 solder, with the desoldering braid of course, and recap some more Bestec PSU's that I've recapped so many of, they never stop comin' in, stupid Jamicon's.

For 0805 tacking, I use a 3 step process. I put a very small amount of solder on the pad to not increase its thickness very much. If i put too much, I completely wick the solder off, and that is still enough for tacking. That makes it much easier to lay the part flat, and helps me align the part with tweezers. I use liquid flux on the pad, and then tack one side. Then i solder both sides.
For drag soldering, i've bent tons of pins with chisel tips =( I prefer poking at a few pins instead

@LDBuggy Yeah, you have to be careful with dragging, not to damage the pins. The "poking" method is safer in that respect.
