This update from Sustainable Harvest at Origin in Mexico provides an inside look at the women farmers from the 21st of September coffee cooperative in Oaxaca, Mexico. The women are organizing themselves into a formal women's group to manage productive community projects, help organize and sell lots of coffee produced by the 400 women member farmers, and generally promote women's participation at all levels of the cooperative.
Counter Culture Coffee and Sustainable Harvest have been working with the 21st of September cooperative since 2006. In 2005, the co-op farmers separated from the larger state-level coffee cooperative in search of better specialty market access and higher quality in their coffee and their organization. Through Sustainable Harvest's Relationship Coffee model, the cooperative has increased its access to specialty markets, improved the quality of its coffee, and built direct relationships with Counter Culture Coffee roasters.
