This video shows students from second year of the Diploma of Fine Art, TAFE NSW, Western Sydney Institute, Nepean College working on their Film Noir Drawing Project in 2010.

This project was based on 1940's & 1950's American Film Noir Cinema which had its roots in German Expressionist film and American crime novels of the Depression era. The research, which was developed into a series of drawings, included watching films such as Fritz Lang's "M", John Huston's "The Maltese Falcon", Howard Hawke's "The Big Sleep" and Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho". The research also included photographic sessions with models, recreating 'stills' from film noir cinema and focusing on elements such as chiaroscuro lighting, exaggerated cast shadows, melodrama, the 'femme fatale', unusual camera angles and black & white images.

The female models are Catherine Bargwanna & Philippa Smith. Their male counterparts are students Nathan May, Michael Sharpe, TJ Combos and Trevor Roe.

The drawings are by students Carol Fitzgerald, Bruni Guenther-Tsapilis, Molly Rankins Schumann, Katherine Fallah, Dani Allira, Pauline Tivoli, Natalie Horvat, Alice Sciberras, and Liz Dubi.

The project was devised and facilitated by drawing teacher Di Holdsworth.
