Excerpts from Opera and the Undoing of Women by Experience Vocal Dance Company, using an experimental method called the Integrative Performance Practice, an exacting technique that allows the performer the freedom to completely integrate unlimited movement and uncompromised bel canto singing. Chosen moments from our production, Opera & the Undoing of Women inspired by Catherine Clement’s book which looks at the stories of opera from a feminist perspective. Femme fatales, murder, suicide, disease and madness; we felt these ideas might be ready for more than the traditional stand and sing treatment. Here we retain the basic events of the arias and ensembles and sing in original languages, but re-contextualize the pieces as a poetic journey through womanhood while singing in real time.

Choreographer/Artistic Director: Experience Bryon
Music Director/Associate Artistic Director: David Wolfson
Performers: Amy Carrigan, Susan Erenberg, Rachel Hickson, Karen Jolicoeur, Sara Paar, Emma Savell, Julie Turner

  • What a relief that they're NOT "slimmer" like "real dancers." The "real dancer" aesthetic is based on borderline if not outright anorexia. These are whole healthy women with feminine curves in all the normal healthy places, in good enough shape to move while producing a bel canto sound. Wow. An inspiration.

  • ichdenk... is unrealistic - this is not a definitive performance, but I think the ideas they are exploring are worthwhile. For me it is more about the gestures; the singers are already singing well, they have to act, move; don't expect them to be 'professional dancers' (as many professional dancers can't sing like this), but enjoy the presence of gesture and movement where before there was either nothing (bel canto) or there were hammed-up cliches (modern interpretations of opera seria).

  • the singing is very good. But the dancers can't move fast; there are no lines and their feet aren't pointed. Also, professional dancers need to be a lot slimmer. Perhaps it's something that can be improved.
