For my 800th video, I am pleased to be able to offer this brilliant tour de force by Hong Kong fiddler, Dave May. I was very fortunate to be able to film this performance, using my wife's little digital camera, at a recent session of the Hong Kong Folk Society at The Canny Man in Wanchai. This was the closing act for the afternoon, which is just as well, as I don't think anyone would want to have to follow this.

The set of tunes begins with the theme from the Pink Panther movies, continuing with "Monaghan'", a popular jig in E minor also known as 'The Clay Pipe", "Monahan's" and "Port Mhuineachaiin", and ending up with a tune which, Dave tells me, is called "The Music of Ireland".

You can watch a playlist of jigs, reels and other tunes here:

  • I Played this about a year ago, and had completely forgotten about it -a friend 'discovered it' it and alerted me to it's existe/ance . . .sounds good -tho' i say so myself ha ha.

Karen, the girl on my left is counting the numbers that i play ,so i deliberately extend my party-piece as a friendly wind-up.

  • I'm glad you found this, Dave. I miss the Canny Man - and especially your playing. Just got back from the National Folk Festival in Canberra, where we heard some great fiddlers from all over the wold. Pete and Iris were there, as were Charlie and Sue, so it was a bit of a reunion.

  • I could listen to this kind of music all day!

  • So could I, Jack. I was really pleased to be able to record this one.

  • Aweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesoooooooooooooooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmeeeeeeeeeeeee!

  • I just might take you up on that. I haven't been to Canada yet.

  • Curses. Foiled again.

  • You can come to Canada for a visit and join me on the porch for a few days...

  • Thanks for your support, Dan.

  • I do get comments saying, "Don't quit your day job!"

But I'm not listening to them. Only two more months of working life. Then, when I reach 1001 videos I can retire from this too! What am I going to do with myself?
