This young guy is fired up and nails every note like it will be his last chance to play. He inspires this old dog to try some new tricks. Although I can't think that fast anymore, I can learn some of his phrases and changes.

  • That just put Govan in my top tier with Yngvie and Greg Howe. P.S. And for all you Malmsteen haters out there, I don't care! :)

  • Anyone know where I can get this Jam Track?

    Thanks

  • I always have resisted learning guitar theory as I prefer to approach guitar playing as an emotional experience, but this kind of playing is not attainable without a sound knowledge of music theory. Guthrie is a gifted musician with supreme sense of melody and a technique second to none. He makes me love and loathe playing guitar at the same time, knowing what can be done with a guitar, and also knowing that I will never be able to accomplish that.

    Thanks Mr. Govan!!!

  • I remember reading a rave review of Guthrie's demo in a guitar mag years ago. My playing is still as shit as ever but he's just taken it to an incredible level.

  • !!!

  • @112358miau Thats what I meant by "involves". In a way, jazz, blues, and rock all have tension-release, but to me jazz and fusion have the most noticeable/extreme tension-release. For example I've seen Larry Carlton use a pentatonic scale for a song and for tension, he played the same scale a fret lower. Of course this is all MY opinion and everyone has their own, but thats my take on it.

  • @MoneyPieBoy Near, for me it's more a way of thinking. You don't need to choose the "wrong" notes always to be fusion, but you should know which of them have which sound, tension-relax and all that

  • my talent-sucking machine is almost ready NYAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

yes well I can dream too. you jerk.

  • @guitarfusionjazz Hey man, just to let you in on a bit of theory, if this backing is in D minor, d minor is not the only scale you can play, you say guthrie is playing in Eb? then that would mean he is capturing a phrygian b5 sound, but he is not consistently in the same tonal centre, he is shifting the music and creating movement in what he is playing, constantly creating and releiveing tension. Dont be so quick to judge, or you might get owned... again! all the best
