What happens when the identity of a quiet coastal community is high jacked by outsiders with a money making dream?

The dive community of Terrigal, along with the support of local Tourism CEO, Oliver Philpot,, have decided that it's OK, to steal the identity of Avoca Beach, to turn it into the graveyard of the ex HMAS Adelaide for some diving dollars of limited duration.

No matter that this runs counter to all that it known about place branding. No matter that this is sabotage of a superb identity, blind profit making prevails.

At the moment, Avoca Beach has a superb reputation as a clean, safe, beach with excellent surf. it attracts tens of thouuands of visitors and is known around the world. Nothing can improve on that, only mar it.

If this was being done after proper consultation and with due care, it would be one thing. It is not!

The state Government has continually lied about the cleanliness of the ship and downplayed the hazards it presents to heath and to the structure of the the surf and beach.

So , railroaded has this process been, that a recently public meeting by the proponents. CCARP, did not even allow questions.

Judge for yourself if the ship is ready. See. The Adelaide story and the precautionary principle.

  • Worst thing I have ever seen. You're having a sook about a ship being sunk? Please, move to the outback and bury your head in the sand.

  • @ToiletGreece Sorry, you are wrong. Places do get known for certain things, good and bad. it's called reputation.

At the moment Avoca is known as a clean beach with very good surf, and that is worth a lot to the town. Contaminated dive site is not a good label. If that ship had gone down, ordoes go down, full of lead oxide paint and PCBs, that will have an impact on how people view our beach and affect it's reputation. That's for sure. .

  • Hey guess what? it's getting suck :D Another victory for sanity!

  • @visul8 Quite untrue. If it was, I'd reload the other films which have just as many negative comments, Believe it or not film makers like myself enjoy debate, controversy. I ts a pain for me to lose those 133 comments. I looked at ways I could copy and past the lot, even somewhere else, but it's not possible This is why I'm going to leave your three excessive comments up for the time being. Now, you've had your say. Go and make your own movies.
