False hope is in reality wishful thinking or in other words dilutional thinking. Facing reality will teach above anything critical thinking, a moral equivalency which in no way is bad. It is a positive way to be, in terms of mentality.

One could posit a valid hypothesis that believing in the "flying spaghetti monster" is necessary to evolve to a higher level of rationality. If true, the irrational works with the rational.

I think the point here is that if those people who are suffering are soothed and made to suffer less because of their religion, they will not take potential steps to improve the situation in a real way.

It may be true that religion helps them get through the hard times, but it is very parallel in my view to a heroin addict: the addict is happy when they are high, but the house might be falling apart around them...
