The St. Ignatius church's 5pm mass choir in Toowong, Brisbane. Practising before mass.

Lyrics to the hymn, 'Gather Us In':

Here in this place, new light is streaming
now is the darkness vanished away,
see, in this space, our fears and our dreamings,
brought here to you in the light of this day.

Gather us in the lost and forsaken
gather us in the blind and the lame;
call to us now, and we shall awaken
we shall arise at the sound of our name.

We are the young - our lives are a mystery
we are the old - who yearns for you face.
we have been sung throughout all of history
called to be light to the whole human race.

Gather us in the rich and the haughty
gather us in the proud and the strong
give us a heart so meek and so lowly
give us the courage to enter the song.

Here we will take the wine and the water
here we will take the bread of new birth
here you shall call your sons and your daughters
call us anew to be salt of the earth.

Give us to drink the wine of compassion
give us to eat the bread that is you
nourish us well and teach us to fashion
lives that are holy and hearts that are true.

  • Gregorian is for Mass, this stuff isn't.

  • @sparkyann -- this isn't a song ABOUT God, obviously. This is a song that is meant to be a prayer to God, sung in one voice.

  • This hymn is beautiful to me. It is about the people who come together in their beliefs, the diversity of those people. It is a prayer to their God, sung as one voice, and despite the changes in time and history, remains a very strong and true message.

  • lame music

  • Here in this place a bad song is starting, Now will the altar turn to a stage, All that is holy's slowly departing, Making a way for the coming New Age. Gather us in, though we are like captives, Skipping the Mass, now that would be wrong. But Lord, hear our prayer regarding M. Haugen, Give him the courage to put down that bong. See Fr. Bill make a beeline procession, I think he's running, making it terse. He knows if we start this Mass very quickly, We might just have to sing that one verse.

  • LOVE this song...the melody reminds me of medieval times, yet the message is absolutely timeless. LOVE LOVE LOVE this hymn!!!

  • The reason why this isn't heard much today is because we've heard it almost every Sunday since 1980. It's the lazy musician's choice to begin Mass with.

  • I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. Today (August 29), we sang this as our opening hymn. It is #532 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship.

  • We do this song at St. Rose of Lima in Falls River Nova Scotia! Great song!
