  • @fruitikay ...Thus it is misleading, for example, to consider Old English as having a single sound system. Rather, there were multiple Old English sound systems." AND "The exact nature of Old English r is not known. It may have been an alveolar approximant [ɹ], as in most Modern English accents, an alveolar flap [ɾ], or an alveolar trill [r]. In this article we will use the symbol /r/ indiscriminately to stand for this phoneme." So, hmmmm. I guess a trilled [r] must not be all that important.

  • @fruitikay Well, quoting a text wiser than I am... "Old English should not be regarded as a single monolithic entity just as Modern English is also not monolithic. It emerged over time out of the many dialects and languages of the colonising tribes, and it was not until the later Anglo-Saxon period that they fused together into Old English.[5] Even then it continued to exhibit local language variation, the remnants of which continue to be found in dialects of Modern English.[6]...

  • @eeyoretim well...the "r's" aren't rolled, which is a very important thing in Old English.

  • @hobblecocks Because she isn't, it's Old English, a west germanic language spoken in England from 5th century AD to around 11th century. AD.

  • eeyoretim: b/c horned helmets are not supported by archeology? b/c they're very wagner-esque and people hate wagner?
