The more I consider this song, the more I see why it's a classic of its kind. And Rosanne's version is the best to come along, ever. The extraordinary, lavishly-produced recording with Springsteen is rightfully admired, but I also love this live rendition, done on an empty stage in an infinitely restrained, moving arrangement with only one (inspired) acoustic guitar. Two people making truly unforgettable music.

Wow, cackling hens! That's a bit mean spirited, I though the reference was to the hosts of the show, although I will admit it's the worst version of this song I've heard so far. Rosanne topped her father with Flat Top Box though, this just wasn't one of the right songs from the "List", to try. : -)

"you should know baby" - is that not kind of insulting to say to Rosanne Cash? I love this song - and I really love her music. I get annoyed every time I think if of that lame comment.

Cackling hens...funny, I was thinking the same thing. I do think it is a man's song though.

So beautiful, so true. "lost love, loneliness..."

Well done and produced! Mr. Don Gibson would approve! This has kind of a folk flavor, I enjoyed!

@MorrisonElvis Check the ratings. Also, they WATCH it on FoxBus, which has higher ratings than CNBC since Imus started on that network. It's the best forum for music.

Wow, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree...she looks just like her old man!

Dog she's still beautiful and wow a great voice.
I was so moved by her performance on Don Imus' show that I was hoping I'd find it on YouTube.
But this, while the performing is great, is spoiled by nearly two minutes of cackling hens. Do those two bimbos run the Today Show these days? Awful! Maybe someone will post the Imus appearance, which also included 'Long Black Veil' and 'Heartaches By the Number", plus a quiet and interesting interview in a relaxed setting. Or post this, but lose those hens!

"Cackling hens" just about sums it up. Kathy Lee Gifford talked over Rosanne Cash twice.
