A mini-demonstration shows how a small structure becomes unstable if it is raised onto tall posts. This is analogous to older homes built on post-and-pier foundations, which are vulnerable to shearing during large earthquakes. Architect John Parazette explains how to build shear walls when retrofitting an older post-and-pier home. Leslie Miki and Kawika Rambler, portraying a husband-and-wife team, demonstrate how easy it is to retrofit, to the surprise of Auntie Lita. This is part 3 (of 4 parts) of CSAVs 1997 video, Earthquake and Volcano Hazards on the Island of Hawaii, produced with FEMA grant funding. Big Island actors include the inimitable Angie Libadisos Baker, portraying Auntie Lita, who visits her various relatives to make sure they are strengthening their homes against future earthquakes.
