There was ⓃⓄⓉⒽⒾⓃⒼ more progressive minded in politics at the time than freeing black slaves. The ⓈⓄⒸⒾⒶⓁ ⒸⓄⓃⓈⒺⓇⓋⒶⓉⒾⓋⒺⓈ of the time wanted to.... wait for it..... ⒸⓄⓃⓈⒺⓇⓋⒺ the social order of the time. The (D) and the (R) mean nothing.

@AmeriProud67 I wouldn't call it prosperous...California does not have any of the major types of abortion restrictions—such as waiting periods, mandated parental involvement or limitations on publicly funded abortions—often found in other states. Out of the 50 states (+ Washington DC) that AGI lists data for, California's 2008 abortion total places it at number 1 on the list. Morale, not good. I'd rather be poor and moral than rich and immoral. And now the Prop 8 thing again.

@Ramonafloyd Actually ignoramus- Uncle Tom was a slave, who was given a whip and told to beat another slave; he refused to do so, and was beaten to death. Secondly, it was the Democratic party, and Whig party that didn't want to free slaves. And all first black politicians were Republican, and of course hunted down by the KKK the strong arm of the Dem party, who hated Republicans white or black, but mostly black- learn ya history before you say things that make you sound foolish.
