Another of my symphonic voyages around the world. This time it's Vienna, the town where many musicians have stayed to compose great music. Masters like Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Bruckner and Sibelius.
Chopin once tried his luck here, but left for Paris instead because of the chilly reception he got from the Viennese public. Vivaldi also came here to sell his concertos after having been banned by the church in Italy. He died shortly after his arrival, poor and ignored.
Gustav Mahler was once one of the most important cultural figures in Vienna's music world, working as the chief conductor at the Opera house. He had to leave because of the harsh anti-semitic tensions at the time. His bold attempts of re-orchestrating Beethoven's ninth symphony was also met with contempt by the conservative audience. They said: "Don't mess with our Beethoven!"
And Schönberg had to pack his bags as well, leaving for America where his modern atonal string quartets would be better received and where there would be no riots to stop his music from being performed.
Vienna has been a cruel and demanding city, even for a genius like Mozart. At first his music was adored, but when the music taste of the day changed, his music suddenly was out of fashion. Another great tragedy of Vienna, the city of dreams...
Sibelius wanted to take private lessons in counterpoint for Bruckner, but the old master and professor was already overbooked, being the most knowledgeable expert in music theory and counterpoint at the time, working at the prestigious University of Vienna as lecturer in harmony and counterpoint between the years 1875 to 1894.
