Everett Dance Theatre presents The Brain Cafe: Jan 2011 Brian Jones Snippet

More info: http://www.everettdancetheatre.org/everett-dance-theatre/brainstorm/

In the coming year, Everett Dance Theatre will create a multimedia dance/theater production entitled Brain Storm. The piece will examine new developments in brain research, and the imminent neurological revolution. Many experts believe we are currently at a tipping point in terms of our understanding of how the brain works. Soon we will all have to grapple with the potentially positive and ill effects of this radical paradigm shift, as it begins to affect our everyday lives. Medical, technological and pharmaceutical advancements will raise a host of important ethical questions, such as their use by the military, the legal system, advertisers, etc. Researchers are rapidly amassing knowledge enabling them to map the spectrum of human emotions, beliefs, and tendencies in our neural circuitry. Neuroplasticity, the idea of transforming our own brains by how and what we think, is a widely accepted phenomenon.

The brain holds an innate interest and is a rich subject for a dance/theater piece. It is perfectly suited to the kind of in-depth, research-driven, and visually layered examination that Everett Dance Theatre is known for. The company believes it can play a synthesizing role, looking at disparate elements and finding unexpected connections. As storytellers, they can translate technical information into affecting human stories. As humanists, they can anticipate and critique the social implications of technological advancements. Everett will seamlessly blend elements of choreography, storytelling, factual information, humor, and video projection, to create a multimedia dance/theater experience that informs, entertains and provokes thought. Educational programs such as public forums and lecture demonstrations will be developed alongside the performance, and will extend the dialogue to grade schools, universities and community settings wherever the show is performed.

This project has received funding from Creative Capital's -- Multi Arts Production Fund, the New England Foundation for the Arts -- National Dance Project, the New England Foundation for the Arts -- Production Residency, and Art Ventures New Hampshire/Crotched Mountain Foundation.
