Toyota dealer demonstrates recalled pedal fix

Video of Doug the Master Technician doing what thousands of Toyota service people will soon be doing to millions of Toyota vehicles in the coming months: fixing recalled pedals by inserting a shim into each pedal assembly.

problem with all cars now is there too reliant on electronics if it was a mechanical accelerator assembly, having the accelerator stuck could be corrected by the driver pulling the pedal up with there foot.

I like to see mr. Toyoda send some of his family members down the road in one of these "repaired" cars for a long cross country trip. And, see how they end up.

Did you see how these tiny metal bits are installed...?

I can understand "hand assembled" parts... If they are done by technicians from Porsche, McLaren, or even BMW.

But, when you have mechanics using hand-picks installing things... and they DON'T even know WHY they are doing it, I would be VERY hesitant to put any of my family or friends into a vehicle that's been monkey wrenched together with some small metal bit(s) that's been added - as a matter of fact - "repair" ... ?

Because... these "little shim" piece(s) was SUPPOSE to be originally installed in the "NEW" pedals when they installed years back.

Guess Toyota felt if they put these shims back like it was originally designed, all will be forgiven.

Major recalls like this are incredibly expensive, to the the tunes of billions of dollars. I'd doubt Toyota would green light the recall and blow a massive chunk of cash on it unless they know exactly what went wrong.

I don't think they really know what the problem is. They have blamed floor mats, driver error and faulty pedals. Has anyone ever seen a faulty pedal? The tech doesn't even know why the slack needs to be taken out of the pedal spring with a shim. I wouldn't be surprised if I heard about a "repaired" Toyota that still accellerates unintentionally.

who knows? I surely do not. I have heard many media outlet proclaim they do not think this is the problem, and clearly not the fix. We will see.

Has anyone actually seen a pedal assembly that is actually sticking. I have not heard of one that was actually causing a problem.

Seems like this would cause slow return of the throttle as opposed to a sudden acceleration issue.
