Many Swimmers use different styles of Freestyle to accomplish the same goal - to swim fast. Choosing which swimming techniques to train with can make the difference between being fast and being slow. The question is, how to choose which Freestyle is right for you? Gary Hall Sr demonstrates three styles of freestyle originally described by Mike Bottom and talks about each style's strength and weakness and which style may be the best for your swimming training program.

  • So, what I get from all these strokes is that I need a strong kick. Damn it.

great videos, thank you so much for sharing.

  • @risenflame yes, this is very true...the legs are the swimmer's engine! Make sure you check back over the coming weeks for our series on legs and how to make you a better kicker.

  • @theraceclub wait thats not true at all especially in distance... In the 1976 olympics the 1500 winning time was 15:02 by brian godel, which is a pretty good time even by todays standerds (And they had the worst walls of all time back then) and these swimmers didnt kick much at all. in fact if you look at second place bobby hacket with a 15:03 (who led most of the way) he had a weak 2 beat kick, the only purpose of the kick in distance is to stop your hips from dragging

  • @harrirman While you are right about not overkicking in a longer race, it's still very important to have a strong kick. Sun Yang uses a 2 beat kick throughout the race until the end when he turns on a 6 beat kick to finish in a 25 second 50! Without a tremendous feel for the water with his feet Sun's 2 beat kick wouldn't be as effective. Don't you think Hackett would have beaten Goodell if he had a stronger kick? When you want to turn it on and beat the swimmer next you, you better have a kick!

  • Thanks dkduane and wasteland44. Every week we have secret video tip. Make sure to check out our website for many more videos! And of course let us know if there's anything particular that you would like to see in a future video.

  • What does, stroke rate 67-71 mean?

  • kick... kick...kick... i need beats

  • The most helpful swimming viedo I've seen. I'm trying to get under 30 seconds for 50 freestyle and now realise I'm trying to do so using the wrong technique. Will have a go at the shoulder driven technique instead and see how it goes. Cheers for a great vid.

  • I always wondered about Phelps style that why his left and right strokes are not equal! After seeing this video clip, now I realize what he is doing. I think Phelps and Lezak have an additional motion when sprinting which is up an down motion in area of upper body.

  • se necesita perfeccionar el estilo y lo que hace la patada es mantener el equilibrio, con la brazada SE AVANZA!!

  • This is a great video :).

  • the most insightful video i've seen on freestyle technique, many thanks ~ TC

  • speaking about strong kick my dream has always been being a badass 50m sprinter but then i realized how poor my kick was bcause of my bad ankle flexibility, its frustratingly limitant,i've tried several shoulder driven styles but my feet r like a pair of parachute holding me back, the best result i got was kicking the least possible and letting my upper body do most of the work only using my kick 2 let me rotate and keep my hips high, like stefan nystrand. Can u b a sprinter with an L shaped ankle?

  • Very cool! I love swimming
