@gordonitis It also matches the engine soeed with what it will be in the lower gears. If he does not do it the engine braking will break the rear tires lose and he might spin or over rev the engine.

@michaelanthony He is matching the engine revs with the trans speed to release pressure on the gears so he can shift without the clutch. The trans has no syncros.

@bnracer08 No computer. It's got straight cut gears and no syncros. you just pull into gear. No clutch release required.

what? a gearbox doesn't "rotate to higher rpm's" when you press the clutch! you blip the throttle on downshift because when the clutch is released with a lower gear selected, the engine output shaft better match the transmission shaft speed or you'll risk locking up the drive wheels. in a rear-engine car prone to oversteer already, that's a recipe for a spin.
