This is how I achieve a somewhat professional look using iMovie alone.

I forgot to mention to add a vignette to your shots! Double click your clips, click video effects, and choose vignette.

Also, when you create the letterbox in Photoshop, the aspect ratio is width: 940 pixels, height: 540 pixels.

Here is a link if you want to have my letterbox:

  • Is there a way to prevent the letter box from overlapping the video. I had to re-shoot some parts because the letterbox was on there face. I'll just have to keep this in mind next time

  • @604912gj that is the downside... you just have to keep in mind to give the top and bottom of your shots some head room while shooting, ive also had the same problem with some of my older footage

  • you just saved my whole life...ty

  • @UGOFFICIAL no problem ;]

  • Could you just invert the colors of your letter box file when you create it to save a step in iMovie?

  • @YBJaredYoung possibly, but unfortunately i cant check... i just recently upgraded to ilife '11 and the letterbox effect doesnt work in the newest imovie. i will figure out a way around it and post soon, if you get it to work let us all know!

  • READ THIS to get the letterbox without cutting out video just export it to quicktime. Then go to options on quick time export thing in imovie and change the size of the video to 1920 by 800. That will give you the letter box without cutting off part of the video.

  • Nice tutorial, but I thought Cinematic looks appear at 510x200 pixels (or 2040x800 blown up 4x larger). I'm talking CinemaScope. :)

  • You look weird

  • @reelzapanimation That's genius! thanks buddy

  • @Madgegames make the inside green instead of white then try it

  • @Terz1c thanks sooo much bro!

  • @BryceG1990 try exporting the video with the transitions on it, then import that into your library and add the effect onto that clip

  • The letterbox you supplied me with slowly gets wider and wider (downwards) as the video goes on, I don't know if it's my video, or your letterbox? No problem, if it's your letterbox, I can make my own, I just need to know.

  • not even the inverted letterbox appeared. what do i do?
