I agree with many of your points however, on a biased opinion, i do think there should be more scope for CSW's (not interpreters) from a signing background. To say you have the qualification is excellent but what of those who have signed all their lives to be told they have to go and prove through all the levels that they can. This is an expensive practice. Wouldn't it be better for those poeple to be able to simply take the hihger lvl exams?

There are some lovely people in our local Deaf community/ Deaf club but it seems that they do not have the opportunity or time, very often to communicate with us hearing people. So where do we get the practice? I watch videos, nearly every day but need more practice - part of the reason is sensetive (private) which I don't want to post publically. Does anyone know sites where it is possible to BSL conversations via webcam please?

It is true that it is really important to have high standards in BSL and good quality interpreters. I have BSL LEVEL 2 , and I would love the opportunity to mix more with the Deaf community.

...as for what you say about interpreters refusing to give you a reason for not accepting work..well..simply..they dont have to. there could be hundreds of reasons why they may not want to accept a job and which they dont want to discolse to everybody. like you say if you book through an organisation you ahve more chance of getting an interpreter than a refusal from a freelancer, however what you dont see is the amount of interpreters have turned the agency down for that job

....and i also agree that there are some crap ones too!
however, why do you blame all interpreters for this? yes there should be a law out there to protect deaf people and the government should make it compulsory for interpreters to be registered with either the irp or cacdp before they can be booked for a job...i also feel that csw's should be registered with one of these bodies too!

you have lot of very strong views, which is good and you are entitiled to them, but they all seem to be very narrow minded. you do not take into account that CSW's are not interpreters you say that you cannot use them because they are all crap! i am sure that there are quite a few really good csw's outhere that just dont have the money or the time to undertake full interpreter training...

I agree with the points you raised. It is important for all of us to uphold standards and raise awareness. I would like to see Deaf History as compulsory to all those going through BSL Level 2/3 qualifications too as only then can we begin to appreciate deaf issues. Bobbie :-) x
Lawyers, and doctors do take expensive rate more than interpreter rate. I have myself experienced CSWs are lazy to use excuse to say expensive, and stay on the same job, making deaf people passive. No No.
