Raising BCs minimum wage to $10 per hour could result in a loss of as many as 52,000 jobs, concludes a new peer-reviewed study from independent research organization the Fraser Institute.
The study, The Economic Effects of Increasing BCs Minimum Wage, examines the research on the effects of increases to minimum wages in Canada and around the world and calculates that an increase in BCs minimum wage to $10 per hour from $8 per hour will result in job losses ranging from 10,898 jobs to 52,200 jobs.
This is a conservative estimate that only looks at the impact on teen and youth workers, said Niels Veldhuis, Fraser Institute director of fiscal studies and co-author of the report.
The minimum wage as gone p in phase 2 I took note, it's nw $9.50 an hor but pub & bar workers are exempt...why. Some don't do as mch but places like the Shark Club downtown do...and then what abot thos that work in restuarants that get big tips are they not included...to thik I hav to giv the waitess a tip when they are only doig their job...I'd rather not tip 'em if I can get away with it, their working just like anyone else that caters to individuals. I believe veyone shold get $9,50/hr.now

and ho w do you justify having a minimum wage that is so much lower than the poverty line..dont you think those 2 should match up?
Get it threw your heads, when you can make more money panhandling on the street than you can working 8h you have a problem.
When you have support structures making upwards of 100% more per hour than the end sales clients they are dealing with, ie: Food service delivery drivers making 29$ ph while cooks make 14$ per hour
this video is disinfo @ its worst shame on you

Man even B.C Republicans are puppets for the rich. let me break this down for you most big companies such as Nintendo start out at $10 and up and hour that's in US so it's about $12 Canadian. also restaurants like Subway have about a 300%-600% mark up on there food. just on soft drinks it's about 1500% yes that $1.59 small drink costs them about $0.10 including the cup and ice.....!

It's common since when 30% of people can't afford to spend any extra money it's going to have a negative effect on there economy. which in return makes business close I wish the U.S. was $10 an hour ? hell that would fix our economy in a year it's simply.
more spending = more business hiring especially retaliators.....!

What if these minimum wage workers went on strike? That would mean employees from Mcdonalds, or Starbucks, or even Cashiers from Grocery Stores. They would get what they want, and to be honest, they will get what they need. There are many people living in poverty and minimum wage is partially to blame. 10 dollars an hour is not much, comparing to 10 dollars is a meal from Mcdonalds. Will the extra 2 $ make that much of a difference in the companies financial position? Like this post i you agree

"3.4% of Canadian workers are earning the minimum wage" Does that mean they are earning the current minimum which is 8$, or the projected minimum, which is 10.25$? It seems to me like the latter would make more sense to use in an argument, since those people would not experience any change.

My parents immigrated here when I was 2 years old. They could not speak english, had no money, and spent the first few months in Canada living at a YMCA(private organization). Not once did my parents receieve a government handout.
Flashforward 19 years - - - We have 3 cars, a 3/4million dollar house, 2 condos, 4 businesses, and are living the canadian potential. The magic of capitalism baby.
Governments need to get out of the way not implement rules and regulations.
Viva la free-markets!

Just to clarify, I was being sarcastic, Anothercoilgun's emotional rant was totally irrational.
No one gets "trapped" in minimum wage jobs. The problem is when people speak of min wage job earners they don't talk about the issue in relation to time.
The fact is in Canada, the lowest decile of income earners is an extremely mobile group. If you take a snapshot now, and a snapshot in 5 years, only 6% of the people in this income category would still be there, proving there is ample opportunity.
