I think in the 60's when he was in his technical prime. It's a shame they didn't record him more in the 60's and 70's. This is a prime example of Ustadji at his prime. If anybody knows of a place to get this or any other of his out of print; rarities in the 60's and 70's. PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

Great stuff! I think it is important to put aside your petty small minded stuff and hear the music instead.

Really great sitar shredding lol. He's one of the greatest instrumentalists of all time.

@vintageaudio54 ... refused to anyother sitaar player except Ustad ji, and he kept his words all his life. they both became very close friends even after partition when Z.A. Bukhari migrated to Pakistan they were still very close friends... and according to Mr. Bukhari that the best thing he misses in India is listning to Vilayat Khan face to face...

@vintageaudio54 I read this in the auto biography of Zulfiqar Ali Bukhari (director of All india radio at that time and first station director of Dehli radio station) that Ustad ji was 14-15 when he turned up at the station with his sitaar on his shoulder and insisted to see Z.A. Bukhari and refused to leave without doing so! finally he was taken to Mr. Bukhari and Mr. Bukhari asked him what he wanted? Ustad ji said I want to play sitaar, Mr. Bukhari said go on then. He played his sitaar and

I had great fortune of listening to him playing Raag Malhaar at Sanmukhanand Hall, Bombay, in June late sixties . It went beyond midnight and when it was over ,I remember for several minutes nobody moved as we were totally awed by the performance. It was a spiritual experience. and outside it was fittingly raining cats and dogs.
He was a true master. His jugalbandis with Ustad Bismillahkhan were legendary. Listen to Shujaat playing Malkauns. He has that spark of younger Vilayatkhansaheb.
vintageaudio54, now this is a great upload, what about the end part? plz try to upload that too; very unfortunate that we don't have much collection of the greatest sitar player's performances in 60's or even 70's; I heard that Khan Sahib did not want to play for All India Radio; is it true? I used to listen to All India Radio's classical programs a lot in 1960's but rarely heard him;

@AapKiFarmaish - Yes, he did stop performing for AIR long time ago. The following is an extract from the book" Ustad Vilayat Khan" A Life Set to Music" " Ustadji reminisces about an incident that took place in 1944. He had gone to a cobbler in Kolhapur to get his slippers fixed, and found much to his surprise , that the cobbler was singing an" asthai" in Malkauns.
