Pen Anglas just outside Fishguard in South Wales, UK. A windy location with basalt columns like at Giant's Causeway. This location has a diaphone sounding fog horn, the only Aid to Navigation diaphone left in the UK (Europe?) I head it in 2002ish and it is a low tone, 2 blasts every minute with a very distinctive grunt. A local dog walker told me it is still used and can be heard in Fishguard on fogy murky dark days. I was told it is a reassuring sound! Not sure how it is operated- remotely via radio? Electric powered? The access would be difficult for fuel.

If anyone has a recording please get in touch.

  • I wish I had some footage of the diaphone at Hood Point.

  • The equipment shed where the diaphone is installed in is about the same size. It has a large light grey resonator coming out the front.

  • There is an active diaphone at the lighthouse where Iive! Plus, the light is run by keepers! (97% of our lights are manned).

  • The only AtoN diaphone in the UK!? Where I stay, there are diaphones scattered all over the country; and all of them are active AtoN's. The reason why there are so many diaphones in active serive is that most of our lights are manned!

  • well they have diaphones in the uk many sounded for special occasions or on a regular interval on like a sunday for the visitors since many lighthouses are very old and of historical nature, only a handful left really even stateside I think I found about 6 places that have the origional diaphone foghorn, like east brother, or on the islands a lake supperior, that are automated though, o and grandhaven michigan has one, that is about it.

  • Great footage Des, I hope someone has a recording of it.

  • Interesting. There is a very similar looking horn in the dome of folkestone lighthouse - it's been replaced by an electric beeping horn, but i don't see how that would have operated, either! It's above the lens, so i don't understand how the machinery is fitted into the tower... and couldn't the vibration cause damage to the lens? its visible in the photo on my website.
