I like this video. We all like to think we have it under control in all sailing situations but we don't really.there are always distractions and unseen variables. I was thinking do this,do that or whatever when i saw them turtle but its easy to armchair captain and they did a good job as far as im concerned.
It might be how far back the mast is raked but it has mostly to do with the shape of the kite I believe. I have always figured it was just the way the kite was directing the air so it pulls up on the bow kind of like a 420 spin. With those kind of spins its a little slower than others which would dig the bow but the 16 has enough problems with pitch poling as it is lol...
@Jahmohn Yehh, well said! Any idea why the Kite generates so much lift on the 16 compared to other cats (or even yachts etc.) Is it to do with the mast being raked back so far?
Actually, the spinnaker sail for the 16 lifts the bow out of the water on a downwind leg. As a result, though it will make you fly a hull, it will make pitch-pooling the boat much harder and is actually very helpful in heavier air. (Though as this video demonstrates you can still pitch)
no balls pull the kite in at 1:14

At about 3:40, you can see one of the crew hauling in the spinnaker (red sail.)
