Gretchen doesn't die, if you see the ending Donnie travels back in time (somehow), and goes into his bedroom before the engine crashes, the engine lands on him, he dies, he never meets Gretchen, and as a result she never gets run over by the car.

i love that movie but i still don't really get why frank is driving a car in the end as if he was human...its so sad that gretchen dies.

He actually did go through to safeguard the future. As he died he destroyed the parallel universe that had been created.

no he went through the time portal at the end of the film which brought him back to the past where he was lying in his bed, he chose to die
