Australia wrapped up the first Test on day three, thanks to some impatient and irresponsible West Indies batting in their second innings. Beginning at 0/13 the home side soon lost its young opening pair, then McGrath snared the critical wicket of Lara with a beauty. Only Richie Richardson (35) and Jimmy Adams (39 not out) offered much resistance, as McGrath took five wickets to take his match tally to eight. It was the first in thirty years that the West Indies had lost a Test match inside three days.
