The first and only successful slave revolution in the Americas began in 1791 when thousands of brutally exploited slaves rose up against their masters on Saint-Domingue. Égalité for All: Toussaint Louverture and the Haitian Revolution explores this history through music, voodoo ritual, powerful re-creations, and insightful writers and historians. Laurent Dubois and others weave the stories of slaves, free people of African descent, wealthy whites, and French administrators into a tale of insurrection, war, heroism, and victory.

  • The Haitian revolution also caused a wave of white Haitians to be displaced, relocating to many areas including Louisiana, which would have had much influence on America, the evolution of Southern culture and the surrounding areas of relocation. The truth is that Haiti is such a poor country for many different reasons, but I personally think Europe, and the US are mostly to blame. I mean at the time how in the hell would a Negro nation going to convince any slave nations to aid them in success?

  • For anybody who thinks the French or the Haitian revolution did not have a great impact on the world, you more than likely don't know jack about history. I am far from a PHD in History, and have only began to even scratch at the history of Haiti, but the history and the legacy of the Haitian revolution should never be forgotten. The revolution of Haiti both inspired so many blacks, and minorities alike to fight for their freedoms, as well as created major fears among the whites of the Americas.

  • The Haitian Revolution reverberated throughout the Western Hemisphere scaring whites (especially plantation owners, slave traders, and overseers) and inspiring blacks and encouraging them never to allow themselves to be dispirited and broken. The United States should've thanked and rewarded Haiti for their triumph. Had it not been for the Haitian triumph the US would not have doubled their land through the Louisiana Purchase.

  • This was done through indemnity fees they had to pay France in order to be recognized, by the white world, as an independent state. This is strange when considering that they whipped the French's ass yet they were obligated to pay France for their loss. Also, the US, under Thomas Jefferson, placed an embargo on Haiti which further crippled the infant nation economically. They couldn't stomach the notion of a black republic asserting themselves and being prosperous on equal terms with whites.

  • Absolutely, it's no wonder that you don't hear or learn much about the Haitian Revolution. It's because that particular tidbit of history is menacing to white academia. When you're in school you learn so much about the American, French, Bolshevik, Cuban, revolutions but nothing about Haiti. That's because black people in Haiti reasserted their manhood and took charge of their lives by gaining freedom. This loss was embarrassing for the Western nations so they decided punish them economically.
