The state of Baja California Sur has experienced and successfully treated three confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus in late April. Due to the immediate attention and action taken by local health officials, all patients are currently in good health and no one in the patients family has contracted the virus. Moreover since April 28th, no additional cases have been confirmed not only within Los Cabos but rather within the entire state.

Mexico as a whole is reporting a reduction in the number of cases of the virus prompting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the U.S. State Department to remove travel warnings related to Mexico and H1N1 Flu on May 15th.

Additionally and within Los Cabos specifically, many of the destinations celebrated hotels, restaurants and businesses have been recognized by the federal health authorities with the Distintivo H award, the most important and renowned award bestowed by the Secretary of Tourism to business establishments that have highly trained staff and have met strict international standards of quality and hygiene.

It is also important to note that Los Cabos is located at the southernmost tip of the Baja Peninsula, bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the west and the Sea of Cortes on the east. This isolated and island-like location works to further protect residents and visitors to Los Cabos from the spread of H1N1 as all points of entry can be more easily monitored.

Accordingly, precautionary measures are being taken throughout Baja California Sur including the international airports in Los Cabos, La Paz and Loreto in order to safeguard the health of visitors and residents as well as to prevent potential influx of the virus. Passengers are subject to a survey and screening process that allows health officials to quickly identify and contain even the slightest indication of presence of the A (H1N1) virus within the state.
