Chaharshanbe Suri is a ancient Persian festival of fire dating at least to 1700 BCE of the early Zoroastrian era.
The celebration usually starts in the evening of the last Tuesday of the Iranian calendar year, with people making bonfires in the streets and jumping over them.
The word Chahar Shanbeh means Wednesday and Suri is red.
The Islamic Regime fears that the Green opposition is seeking to turn the celebration into a protest event.
This could be the reason why they repaint the stones along the streets in Vanak Square in Tehran. Green is the colour of the opposition!
