@saturni11 You lack in a knowledge of population migration and History. Southern Italians are desendants of Ancient Greeks, since Doric Greeks had heavily colonised Southern Italy (and Sicily). this is why they still speak a dialect of Greek in southern Italy called Griko. Todays modern Greeks are genetically the same people as Southern Italians. Hellene is what the Greeks call themselves, 'Greek' is the name the Italic tribes gave to the Hellenes. And the name has stuck.

@HaggisMacfee Just so you know , south italian people are mostly descendent of illyrians tribe ( messapi and japigi ) and etruschi and this is what i was saying before abot ancient hellens and toady greeks. Ancient hellenic were a mix between pellasgians ( the very first inhabitant of balcans ) and doric tribes. Today greeks god knows what they are , speaking genetically ,about language and costums.
