Dang, having a software plug in is all it takes to make my record sound like a million bucks. Thanks for enlightening us. OH, how long will it take me to learn to play like Hendrix? Do you have a plug in for that too?

It flattens the sound. Personally, I LIKE having part of the song loud and part quiet. Imagine "Smells like teen spirit" the same volume all the way through. No thanks.

Each track is so unique in its sonic character and dynamics that most professional engineers won't start with any presets. It's better to start completely flat and have in your mind the end result before starting to process. All errors in the mix are sorted beforehand (clicks / pops / noise / one-note-bass / etc), then EQ / dynamics / mid-side / psychoacoustic properties are finely adjusted afterwards (if required to alter them). Any required character is added at this stage too (i.e. Tape Sat.)

I agree. But the pros that I've met all state that they use presets for drum compression or vocal eqs. Then tweak accordingly. Mostly dude to that fact that they do so many projects, and many artist are looking for a simular sound.

No real professional mastering engineering will use presets. Presets are starting points for the inexperienced - and way too often it's the end point as well.

I think youtube has messed up the comments again. I was actually replying to someone who said mastering engineers used presets to try and convince them they don't. It put my comment as a normal one rather than showing it as a reply, as per usual. Anyway, I don't use any presets when pre-mastering. It's just not right is it.
