A short virtual tour of Plate 372 from John James Audubon's fabulous book, Birds of America published from 1831 to 1837. Each plate being a hand coloured aquatint approximately 38 x 25 inches.
About 60 complete sets survive, the rest were broken up for the prints or never completed. About 200 of each print was produced of which an estimated half survive to this day. Most are in poor condition having suffered considerable damage over the years, especially colour changes due to aging. Unlike all other reproductions, this is a completely restored example showing how this print would have looked on publication but without the engraving, printing and colouring faults that always occured in those far off days.
It takes longer to restore these prints to this standard than it took Audubon to paint the image in the first place! This relatively simple print required over 200 man hour's dedicated work.
