Morality & goodness usually stem from the simple objective exercise of empathy & compassion, *period*, but oftentimes can be subverted when that objective exercise is muddled by subjective influences (such as racial bias, religious bias, etc.). Manufactured 'zero tolerance' absolutes in ethics/morality, by religion or whatever, is simply a lazy, spoon-fed, cowardly excuse not to have to use common sense, sound judgment, reason, empathy or compassion when confronting a complicated reality.

"exercise of empathy & compassion" That in itself is relative. One person to the next may be relative to your idea of compassion. That is a shakeable foundation.

the essence of Christian ethics is to figure out which things tick God off and avoid them.
