This ship was the top ASW ship of the US Navy Pacific Fleet. With respect to our Australian Navy brothers, the contest would have been much different with a fully functional and operational destroyer. Shooting at a derelict ship hull drifting along and prepared to sink is not much of a contest or a test of wills. But, all good ships, and Fletcher was one of these, must end their operational lives at some point in their careers. Part I
