Here is Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas working absolutely fine in Wine. I show how to install and play it in Ubuntu Linux, and I show some sample gameplay with the Hydra Jet.

I reckon GTA San Andreas was the best game in the GTA series because of the sheer size and verity of what you could do in the game. A quality unmatched by Rockstar until RDR was released.

GTA SA is a Platinum rated game in Wine, for more info see Wine AppDB:
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=3780

The game needs patching up to v1.01 - Google "gta sa patch"
The update gives a huge performance boost to the graphics allowing for a decent frame rate at high resolutions, without the update its pretty appalling to play in Wine.

Installing the game:
Open Configure Wine (winecfg)
Add a new drive letter and select your GTA SA Install CD
Untick "Emulate a Virtual Desktop"
Open GTA SA installer and treat it like a standard Windows install
Download & Install GTA SA Patch v1.01

Running the game:
Open gta_sa.exe which by default will be on your Wine C Drive (~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Rockstar Games/)
Enjoy...

System Specs:
AMD 1100T (3.3Ghz x6)
8Gb RAM
NVidia GeForce GTX 560Ti
Ubuntu 11.04 x64
Wine 1.3.27

  • i got is running befor i installed v1.0.1 and why s the sound all fucked up?

  • @956Joeboy Are you using Wine 1.3.37? I think theres been a duff update with this latest release as the sound is messed up on my system too

  • what's the proper upgrade patch to not crash the game?

  • Think this was the one I downloaded grandtheftauto(dot)filefront(dot)com/file/GTA_San_Andreas_Patch;45852

  • I have the GTA San Andreas DVD-ROM cracked and game works fine under windows XP, without needing the DVD ROM (after installing and replacing the specific .exe file that runs the game with the one from the DVD ROM).

Does this take place too under wine? Is the installation process the same as that under XP?

  • @chalkomatas I would expect it to be exactly the same in WIne. Installation process is exactly the same as well.
