This animation shows how when viewed from the STEREO-B spacecraft, Comet Elenin appears to chage direction around the end of August, 2011. This effect is called apparent retrograde motion. It happens because both the STEREO-B spacecraft and the comet are moving. Thus, from certain angles, the comet will appear to reverse direction with respect to the background stars.

  • you've made elenin look like it has- ' time ' as it's droppings! ; )

  • too bad you did not add a comparison from the stereo-b images into the video. To show your turn versus the recent turn people are concerned about and see just how they match up. Good video tho.

  • Clever and easy to understand...

    Thanks for the info

  • Im Glad there are others out there who actually know how things work in Space,
