This desmodromic valve train is not designed for the casual biker. The cam wear is surprisingly minimal on these motors as the cam followers are not forced against the cam lobes by stiff valve springs. As far as case hardening, Ducati's history of subtle evolution over years of racing have struck a nice balance between over hard brittle parts and soft quickly wearing valve train elements. They are not fragile or finicky bikes. I own four unrestored,running Ducatis. Love em!
