Don't know what this is, seems it's some kind of candomblé or african ritual of some sort, spotted while walking around Pelourinho in Salvador

  • And by the way, any offensive comments towards either the people on the video or me will be deleted. Thank you.

  • The great thing about this title and description is that if I had got it right, I wouldn´t have so many comments, hah.

    I´m keeping it that way.

  • That reminds me of a David Bowie song :D

  • Well... it was in Pelourinho (bahia brazil) indeed, since I was there on vacation and made the clip myself I'm quite sure about that ;)

  • That's stupid, there's nothing to do with Candomble or any sort of religious rituals.

  • I'm not an expert, you see ;)

  • No this is not candomble or a ritual. this is just dance. In candomble they wear the white hoop dresses and have various ritual items or they are singing and chanting. Just because black people are dancing to a drum does not mean its a ritual.

  • OK, so these folks are from the Muntu Dance Theater of Chicago and the African American Dance Ensemble of New York. I know some of those folks, well! They must be in Bahia for performance, and or, discovering their Afro-Brazillian roots. That explains it!

  • This is a harvest dance of the Mandingue culture from Guinea. I recognize it as "Kassa," a harvest rhythm. This goes to show that pure African drumming is found all over the world! This djembefola (djembe player) is good! I

  • Typical of Brazil...people on the street playing African drums..gathering..having fun on a sunny day. Please don't trivialize Condomble because you are clueless ("condomble..or whatever...."). Is is legal now for people of African dewcent to gather in one place.

  • I am from Bahia...not raised there so I don't know much about Candomble...but I know enough to say for sure this is not it..all it is just some sort of African dance...people having fun on the streets of Pelourinho...sorry Eduardo...not even a resemblance of Candomble there.

  • Mais isso não é Candomblé, isso é kuduro

  • This clip was made at BAhia, Brasil- and I'm Brazilian, So: the whole scene was a kind of people having fun , trying to show something for the tourists around. The drums, the rythm are genuine. A few of the movements of those people kind of recall real moments of, say, 'possession'. Nothing more than that- Yet, there's real power in the real cults of umbanda or candomble. The whole thing was brought from Africa centuries ago and is most common in the states of Bahia, Rio.

  • actually these people are playing west african rythms...they are not from candomble because different drums and rythms are used...these are actually people from the african american dance ensemble and muntu dance theatre from chicago...

  • This is West African percussion, not a candomblé ritual!

  • Hi. It´s just people having fun...
