"Democracy Remixed" which is a national video contest we are launching to celebrate the publication of Dr. Cathy Cohen's new book, Democracy Remixed. The book is about black youth and American politics.
In light Dr. Cohen's new book, the upcoming 2010 midterm elections, and reflecting back on the historic election of our first black president, Barack Obama in 2008—where black and Latino youth turned out in record numbers to vote—the Black Youth Project wants to hear from the youth in your organization about how they see American politics and various issues like the baggy pants ban in Dublin, Georgia, the endless shootings of students of color at urban schools, and the silence surrounding street harassment of black girls. In general, this video contest is a great opportunity for youth in your organization to let the world know their opinions about various aspects of politics, especially as it relates to the lives of black youth.

Video submissions can entail, but are not limited to black youth's opinions of President Barack Obama; the Gulf Oil Spill; hip hop and its effect on black youth; the power of youth voices; the struggle to find a job; violence in communities; Bishop Eddie Long and homophobia; Nikki Minaj and the influence of her sexuality on black youth; LGBTQ issues; political leaders; 106th and Park as a place to express black youth music and political preferences; dating violence; HIV and AIDS; cyber-bullying; being a fashionable black youth in a recession; the digital divide; etc. In general, this video contest is a great opportunity for youth of color to let the world know their opinions about various aspects of politics, especially as it relates to the lives of young people of color.

The only stipulation is that it is only three minutes. The video entry can be a video commentary, spoken word piece, creative slide show, dance, rap, skit, a mock news interview, etc. The deadline to submit videos is October 18, 2010. The grand prize is $500 dollars.
