On April 20th 1999, the United States was rocked by a horrific school shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. In the years to follow, many forms of media began to sort out the events of that day. Books were published. Films were made. Then in 2005, one Colorado man created an amateur videogame exploring the actions and possible motives of the two shooters. That game was downloaded over half a million times, became immensely controversial and brought a pressing question to the public discussion: we can read Columbine, we can watch Columbine, but can we play Columbine? Moreover, should we?

In the documentary "Playing Columbine: a true story of videogame controversy," the history of "Super Columbine Massacre RPG!" is traced back to its inception, through the 2006 shooting at Dawson College in which the game was singled out by the media as a "murder simulator" that "trained" the shooter, and finally the game's removal from the list of finalists at the Slamdance 2007 Guerrilla Gamemaker Competition - prompting half the entries and a sponsor to pull out of the festival in protest. Clearly the game has polarized audiences worldwide, giving way to ardent defenders as well as staunch critics.

  • Looking back, Thompson wasted valuable time trying to ruin other people's fun by bashing because of tragedies that they had nothing to do with and it got him nowhere. GTA games and violent video games are still selling which they will remain to do so for many generations to come. So in the end, Mr. Thompson failed as we all predicted.

  • Jack Thompson was simply a certified ignorant douche bag who obviously had a "born with a silver" type of life down in a Florida suburb who never shot a gun. Cause shooting guns and guns on a video are totally different, believe me. There is no way possible they train to use a real gun. lol

  • Thumbs up if you played this game

  • @donovan3955 haha exactly! that guy that said that is a complete dumbass lmao those kids got bullied plane and simple.. video games have nothing to do with it.

  • I dont get it ppl dont like this game but its ok to play cod 2 with other historic events like d-day where a lot of ppl died and nobody says anything against that being placed in a game... dont get me wrong i like cod

  • @goodvibesallround The Christian Right is the master of supply and demand, that's why they find something to create outrage over. It's about SELLING moral outrage, not about moral outrage itself.

  • You know how people could be not offended by this game? By not playing it

  • In doom you dont have to aim vertically, not very good for training

  • reb and vodka looked like gods like they were from some badass action movie straigh nbk shit

  • @BecauseBabysAreTasty He's a retard because he doesn't understand demand. Just like drugs, video games, violent films. People want them...so there must be a supply. Conservatives like Thompson will never understand this and think their christian way of thinking will save everybody. It didn't work in 1930 with prohibition and it doesn't work today.
