I can't believe it's true...I thought it was an Urban Legend.

Scary.

  • That little flap is accualy to stop the fuel from "burping" back out at you. Pulling the nozzle out was probably the dumbest thing she did there. The car wouldn't have "exploded" anyway, it may have burnt, but that's far better than looseing youre life anyday. Plus the station's insurance would have paid for the damages.

  • Not to mention pulling the gas nozzle out wile it was on fire. Possible the dumbest thing you can do. she got lucky. Here in Oregon there is a ban on self service fuel (no extra charge for the full service) And we're trained on how to treat gass fires, spills, ect.

  • @dylanbutler No, she is going want her gas for free, plus money! Thank God for video!

  • @leftysergeant Wrong. You do NOT touch the nozzle after a fire starts. You run away. See video called "MythBusters Cell Phone Gas Station Myth" where they illustrate how wrong removing the nozzle is.

  • This is the reason why I ground myself whenever I get off the car at a gasoline station.

  • let us hope people learn from this video about the dangers of static electricity. never do anything except hold your hand on the fuel nozzle until you are finished filling your car's fuel tank.

  • okay first. turn OFF THE FREAKIN CAR! second: Dont lite ANYTHING on fire that includes cigarettes.

  • @Darquan223 I have to disagree. The last thing you want is for there to be a continuous supply of fuel to the fire. The fuel flow was cut off at once. There is a spring-loaded flap in the pipe in the car. There was probablly a massive over-load of fuel-to-oxygen in the pipe, so chance of explosion is small. Most people do not stay that calm. Notice that she gets the nozzle as far as possible from BOTH her vehicle and the gas pumps.

  • Don't blink..thats fast

  • Our gas pump nuzzles in the uk seem to work differently, it seems in america you can lock the lever on the nozzle on so you can walk away while the car fills up? In the uk you can't do that, you have to stand with the nozzle and hold the lever down so you can't get back in the car and do what this poor woman did.

  • Pulling the nozzle from your vehicle is also one of the worst mistakes you can make if you see a fire. You are better off leaving it in your car and running. This woman was just really lucky.

  • As soon as you get out of your vehicle...immediately touch the body of your vehicle to remove the static charge

do this before going near the gas cap or gas pump and you won't have any problems....well unless some whacko rams your vehicle and traps you between the pump and the vehicle...then you are pretty much screwed like that woman who died in colorado
