Using an ancient principle and applying it to a brand new wood stove. EPA standards do not allow for a coil to be placed in the fire box from the factory. Only wood cookstove manufacturers are allowed to do this so ... we are attempting to do the same thing with an externally mounted coil.

  • Thats not fair!

I want to be an engineer too!

  • Surface area of the coil touching is very minimal. Fire up the blast furnace and cast that coil in a slab of aluminium.

  • I am talking w/David about installing a simple pump on my well & I have a few questions about making hot water in a SHTF. I was going to get a 55 gal. metal drum & make a 10' copper coil that will fit inside the drum & tap into my house water supply on the outside. Then I would add a blend valve at the "Y" tap to regulate the water temp. Is there a problem using copper for the coil? If I make my coil out of 1 piece of copper and solder the tap joints 2' from the drum, will I have probelms?

  • put some rockwool insulation arround the water heat transfer tubeing leaving a 1/2" to a 3/4" gap away from the coil never done something like that before but it seems that it would be work

  • Thanks God for The EPA!

    Where boners go to die.

As soon as Obama is handcuffed, I'm opening my business.

I will go out of my way to avoid hiring anybody from government, except military and avoid selling to government employees.

I looked on Youtube to for ideas to convert my perfectly good wood stove to use a coil as a heat source for hydronic heating and the first thing that pops up is the G@d D@mn EPA.|Now I'll be pissed all weekend.

    Bastards!

  • Great idea! Would welding the heat shield closed on the bottom side and then filling the cavity where the water coil is with vermiculite or some masonry sand add you some better thermal mass to prolong hot water availability after the fire burns out? -Dan Lions

  • EPA. BLAH! The government is way too intrusive on our lives.

  • @okkrom work hard go to school and don't let the norm be your guide

  • I don't know what all you have going on but couldn't you use cold water pressure to move the water through the coil?

  • This mounting ensures low heat transfer to water. Since missing the heat-conducting connection between the stove and pipe. In addition, the heat is on the air through the coil also still limited.

    In sum, the efficiency decreases.

  • So why does the EPA care if there is a coil in the fire box? does it create a safty issue?

  • You mentioned the possible need for a 12 volt circulating pump. What circulating pump will you use? I have a similar need to circulate water between a "modine" and the exhaust manifold of my Onan 30EK.
