On January 12, 2010, an earthquake of 7.0 magnitude struck Haiti claiming approximately 230,000 lives. It was the island's worst earthquake in 200 years. The epicenter, located 26 km from the capital Port au Prince, devastated the city which has 40% of the country's population. The already precarious infrastructure and Haiti's fragile government completely collapsed. The UN estimates that over three million people were affected across the country. Communications, roads and health services were damaged, access to food and drinking water was very difficult. Aid to the Church in Need traveled to Haiti a year later. Even if it was easy to despair in the face of so much suffering and misery, seeds of hope in many people were found: in priests and sisters, laity and bishops who, with great trust in God, were finding a way out of such suffering.- Aid to the Church in Need United States www.churchinneed.org - Aid to the Church in Need Great Britain www.acnuk.org/
