The tiger roared silently, and the lion stood proudly with a mermaid clinging to his side.
The two wooden animals on the 87-year-old carousel were the only big cats in sight Thursday at the San Francisco Zoo, which reopened nine days after a Christmas tragedy shut it down.
"I couldn't see the real tiger so I wanted to ride on it," said Aiden Sagerman, a 5-year-old San Francisco girl perched on the back of the merry-go-round feline.
The indoor Lion House and outdoor exhibits were closed because Tatiana, a 350-pound Siberian tiger, somehow escaped from her yard on Christmas afternoon and attacked three young men from San Jose. She killed Carlos Sousa Jr., 17, and injured two of his friends, brothers Paul Dhaliwal, 19, and Kulbir Dhaliwal, 23, before being shot to death by police.
On Thursday, the sounds of construction filled the air outside the big-cat compound, where a tarp-covered fence kept out visitors. The renovation project, which will take at least 30 days, will make the walls on the five grottos higher and presumably safer.
The first attack fatal attack in a zoo in American history committed by two ugly, disgusting Indians. Kulbir Dhaliwal burn in hell for taunting and mistreating this beautiful animal. Using slingshots to provoke the tiger your ugly Indian parents didin't deserve a penny!!
